In March 2024, a group of adventurers from Singapore embarked on an exhilarating journey. Their goal? To conquer one of Asia’s greatest physical challenges: a hike to the summit of Mount Kinabalu, the tallest peak in Southeast Asia.
This venture was not merely a fitness retreat; it was a mission. What began as a bold goal transformed into a shared experience, complete with trials, challenges, and breathtaking views. The summit sunrise was a moment none of us will ever forget.
What if I trained with purpose?
At Root Fitness, we focus on training that goes beyond aesthetics. We train to explore, to adventure, and to embrace life with boldness. That’s why we launched Experiences—annual challenges that combine structured training with real-world adventures.
In the 6–8 weeks leading up to the hike, each participant followed a tailored training program. This program was designed to prepare their bodies and hone their mindsets for the challenge ahead. The training sessions concentrated on several key areas:
Lower Body Strength: Building strength and durability for the climbs.
Core Stability: Enhancing balance for long ascents.
Cardiovascular Endurance: Improving stamina for the hike.
Flexibility & Recovery: Ensuring sustainable progress and preventing injuries.
We held weekly group boot camps in Singapore. These sessions fostered accountability, and strong bonds formed before we even set foot on the mountain.
“What made this trip even more special was the boot camp sessions we had before the hike. They well-prepared us for the exploration and activity ahead.” — Rai
The Climb: From Sweat to Summit
The mountain offered us everything: stunning scenery, biting winds, challenging ascents, and friendships formed through shared struggles.
After a cosy night in the cabins at Kinabalu Park HQ, we started day one with a group breakfast. This meal fueled us for the first, longest ascent to Panalaban Base Camp at 3,272 meters. That night, we huddled in sleeping bags, shared stories, played games, and enjoyed food with fellow climbers.
On day two, we began before dawn. Our headlamps illuminated the path as we climbed through the cold, dark silence toward the summit. Together, we reached the top and witnessed a spectacular sunrise over Southeast Asia from 4,095 meters.
“Climbing Kinabalu was an exhilarating experience! Even better to do it with great people and with peace of mind that all of the organization had been taken care of by Root Fitness.” — Melanie
Stronger Together. Changed Forever.
Each participant had unique motivations for climbing Mount Kinabalu. Some aimed to challenge themselves physically, while others sought mental fortitude. One individual, in particular, had something to prove to herself and was unsure she could make it. Yet, every single participant succeeded.
They trained smartly, supported one another, and unearthed inner strength that reveals itself only when you push past your comfort zone.
“I loved the small community of participants and the personal encouragement from Root Fitness to get excited and prepared to hike 4,095 m.” — Cindy
Standing at the summit of Mount Kinabalu proved that fitness isn’t about attaining perfection; it’s about discovering your purpose.
